Quad-Lock Announces Green Roof Research Project
SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA -
Quad-Lock Building Systems, Ltd. is pleased to announce the start of a
2-year research project in partnership with the British Columbia
Institute of Technology (BCIT) Centre for Advancement of Green Roof
Technology (CAGRT). The goal of this research is to provide objective
data on the performance of various green roof structures. Electronic
data will be collected and assessments carried out for:
- Stormwater runoff monitoring
- Quality of the stormwater runoff for reuse
- Thermal performance and associated energy cost savings
- Plant species growth, soil media performance and maintenance requirements
Utilizing Quad-Lock's Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) and Quad-Deck products, the Roofing Evaluation Module (REM) is the first all-concrete test structure at BCIT's CAGRT, which was established in 2003. This new REM will be alongside wood frame REM structures that incorporate both green and conventional roofs.
Today's growing urban communities face the challenges of unsustainable increases in energy consumption and the management of storm water runoff, both of which impact the local community infrastructure and environment. Modern structures featuring green roofs can substantially reduce that impact by on-site management and use of storm water, greater energy efficiency, and heat-island effect reduction. Demand for product development and testing from industry prompted BCIT to expand its capacity and create CAGRT. According to Maureen Connelly, Director, Faculty at CAGRT, "Rooftops are the untapped real estate opportunity of the 21st century. Green roofs provide tremendous benefits to the building owner, the local community, and the global community".
The Quad-Deck ICF floor and roof forming system can be used to construct the ideal roof substrate for green roofs, combining long span capacity, high loading capacity, and insulation. Each of the expanded polystyrene (EPS) panels are supported and reinforced with two integral steel beams molded into the product from end to end. The result is a self-supporting joist and deck forming system that provides the maximum strength of a reinforced concrete deck with a minimum of materials and labor.
